Whoops, I didn't send a greeting message! Hello! We'll get going at 1pm CT, but feel free to shoot me a question ahead of time! Talk soon
1:00
And we're off!
The Golden At Bat
1:01
Now MLB can add the Savanah Bananas.  Ridiculous.
Golden at bat
1:01
Has manfred lost his mind? This rule is awful. He needs to be removed before he destroys the game
Blue
1:01
I hate the golden at bat concept being tossed around. Any thoughts?
Steve Adams
1:01
Have about 80 of these questions/comments already, ha. Assume there will be more.
And yes, I think it's stupid and fundamentally changes the game in a way that other recent rule changes generally have not.
1:03
I am also very aware that the league has floated possibilities of various rule changes for years and even experimented on some in partner leagues like the Atlantic League and Frontier League that simply haven't/won't come to pass. I don't think it's something that's really going to be considered anytime soon, and the pushback is probably vocal and visceral enough that it helps quash the possibility. I get wanting to add more "excitement" to the game, but this feels gimmicky and cheap.

Luis Arraez for Luis Castillo +$?
Steve Adams
1:03
Padres would do it! Mariners not so much.

I saw where Mark Bowman speculated AA trading Albies for pitching to Seattle on a hypothetical deal. Your thoughts?
Steve Adams
1:05
Everyone speculates on the idea of trading with the Mariners because everyone wants their rotation. Jerry Dipoto (Mariners president) called trading a big league starter "Plan Z" for him this offseason. And the depth behind the top five guys actually isn't great. I'm sure the Mariners would love to get Albies, but I don't see a real possibility for an Albies/Miller swap or something, for instance.

Does Nolan Arrendo have a no trade clause in his contract? Would he be a fit for Angels?
Steve Adams
1:06
As we've written multiple times, yes he does. He'd also only waive it to land with a clear contender, so I think the Angels are out.
Burn me once, shame on you. Burn me twice...

From reading Katie Woo's piece this morning, it seems the Cardinals have an unrealistically high assessment of Matz's trade value (caveats caveats on the cards trying to set a strong negotiating position through the media). In the past three years, Matz has been mostly hurt, and when healthy, he has been mostly bad. Brief glimpses of talent from a 34-year-old are not enough to bring back anything of value.  Probably "minor league depth". At best a 27-year old AA pitcher who profiles as an AAAA reliever. Am I being unrealistic or is John Mozeliak? What do you think is a realistic return? and who are potential match ups?
Steve Adams
1:07
Matz at $12MM and one year probably isn't wildly off from what he'd get on the open market. If the Cards paid maybe half the deal, I can see them getting a quasi-decent return. At face value though, yeah... Matz at $12MM isn't going to net much of a prospect.
But in a world where Frankie Montas gets $17MM per year with an opt-out coming off a near  5.00 ERA in a slate of 30 five-inning starts, Matz at $12MM isn't an outrageous salary
Angels 2025
1:08
What would it take for halos to get Bellinger?
Steve Adams
1:08
Take on the rest of the money he's owed?
1:09
I don't think the Cubs are getting much prospect help unless they pay down some of the deal.
Darragh and I talked about Bellinger a decent amount on the podcast episode we recorded this morning. It'll drop tomorrow.

I think Nick Pivetta would be a good signing for the tigers. Would a Wacha type possibly or has the market jumped based on other signings?
Steve Adams
1:10
Signings thus far have been for non-QO guys. I don't think Pivetta is getting much beyond Wacha's 3/51, if he even gets there. Anything in the $42-54MM range over three years would seem like a reasonable expectation to me. I'll be surprised if he gets four at his age and with a QO.
Baba Oriley
1:10
Which team that finished toward the bottom of their division do you think makes the ‘biggest’ free agent signing this offseason
Steve Adams
1:10
The Angels finished last and gave Kikuchi $63MM. Might have already happened.
H-Town Train
1:11
Do you see the Astros signing any starting pitchers?
Steve Adams
1:13
No one major. Maybe some non-roster guys for depth, of course. But the priority's probably going to be on the infield corners. They already have Valdez, Brown, Blanco, Arrighetti, Garcia, McCullers and depth options like Gusto, Gordon and Blubaugh.
Hypothetical GM
1:13
Montgomery to the Red Sox, Candelario to the Diamondbacks, and Yoshida + Chris Murphy to the Reds.
Steve Adams
1:14
The Reds are taking on a worse contract to buy a depth starter who's recovering from TJS? I don't see that.
Jordan
1:14
Do you see the Brewers being able to trade Hoskins to free up the $18 million to spend on other needs through free agency?
Steve Adams
1:15
Not unless they're taking another contract back. Hoskins isn't getting $18MM on the open market right now. Could try to dump him on the A's or something, but you'd need to include a decent prospect to shed the whole $18MM.
Travis
1:15
What's been the most surprising signing to you so far?
Steve Adams
1:15
Nothing has really shocked me so far, though I was surprised how well Montas did in terms of his overall guarantee and getting the opt-out.
Milwaukee
1:16
Is Civale worth the projected 8 million he’d get in arbitration? Brewers do seem like they need some safe innings from their rotation, after cutting ties with Rea and Wilson.  Counting on Woodruff, Hall, and Ashby for innings seems risky.
Steve Adams
1:17
I think he is, yeah, but some of my colleagues (Anthony Franco particularly) thinks he'll be traded, which is plenty feasible. The Brewers have a good track record of finding more affordable starters and have moved mid-tier veterans in this salary bracket before.
Harmony
1:17
Any chance Seattle brings back Josh Rojas at a modest salary to play third base?
Steve Adams
1:18
He was only projected for $4.3MM. Non-tendering him and re-signing him for like $3MM to save $1.3MM seems unnecessarily convoluted, even with them facing payroll restrictions again.
John
1:18
How do the Orioles plan to replace Santander if he’s not brought back?
Steve Adams
1:18
Give Heston Kjerstad full-time at-bats, probably.
Ray Jay
1:18
Bichette for Bohm. Jays use savings to get Adames 6/15.Thought?
