Hey everyone, hope you're having a good morning!
Let's talk Cardinals. Interesting team, lots of ways they could go this year

This cant be our rotation come july right?  I just dont see anyone that id be confident in starting a playoff game besides the lizard king.
Card in RI

If we decide to pull the trigger at the deadline for a SP, whose our guy and what would the package look like? Thanks!

Who could you see the cards in on for potential pitching help?  Sucks the brewers are in division because if they fall out of it, id love burns or woodruf

A lot of talk about testing for a true ace closer to the deadline.  What arms do you see available and what does a potential trade look like?
Anthony Franco

Handful of a bunch of questions about possibly trading for a top-of-the-rotation starter this summer, which makes sense
11:01
I agree that's probably the one thing this roster lacks that most other clear-cut contenders have. There are a bunch of solid pitchers here but no one I'd be psyched about running out there in Game One of a playoff series
11:02
Trade possibilities are interesting because there are a handful of potential top-end starters who could become available but need to either bounce back from recent struggles and/or have their current teams fall out of the playoff mix first
11:04
Ohtani's the biggest possibility obviously. Shane Bieber would have a year and a half of remaining club control this summer. Lucas Giolito's an impending FA. The Brewers are down to their final year and a half of Burnes/Woodruff but they'd have to really collapse this year to trade them to what's probably their biggest division competitor in 2023-24
11:05
There's maybe a 10% chance the Phillies play badly enough they have to think about trading Aaron Nola, who'll be a free agent. Maybe Chris Sale stays healthy and looks like a top-of-the-rotation pitcher again by July
11:06
I wouldn't say there's a greater than 50% of any individual pitcher in that group getting traded but there are enough possibilities that at least a couple should be available if their current teams underperform

11:06
Did we really do enough to be considered a WS contender? I'm not sure we even make the playoffs if we're in the East or West.
Anthony Franco
11:07
I wouldn't consider St. Louis a top five team in baseball but anyone who makes the playoffs is a World Series contender
11:08
Atlanta and Philadelphia were the worst two NL playoff teams the past couple seasons and would up winning the pennants. Get in and anything can happen

Besides SP, it seems a LH reliever is also an area that could be improved. Chafin would've been a perfect fit. What LH relievers might be available at the deadline?
Anthony Franco
11:10
Any of the Chafin, Moore, Hand group that St. Louis passed on in free agency could get traded. Aaron Loup maybe. Orioles have a couple interesting left-handers in Cionel Pérez and Keegan Akin they could move if they fall out of contention

Do you feel like the organization has soured on Carlson? I still see him as a big piece of the puzzle. I worry if we move him it becomes an Arozarena mistake.
Rob

With the emergence of Walker, who would fetch more in a trade, O’Neill or Carlson?

11:11
Is the Cardinals naming of Tyler O'Neill starting CF a ploy to boost his trade value for a rotation upgrade?
Anthony Franco
11:13
It's fair to be a little underwhelmed by Carlson, particularly from a power perspective, but I don't think they're at the point where they want to cut bait or anything. It's tough to find center fielders who can hit and Carlson probably still has a little more pop than he's shown this far
11:14
I don't think they're showcasing O'Neill for a trade. Just because they're willing to play him in center field doesn't mean other teams necessarily would be. He's a good athlete and it's a chance to see if they can shoehorn in a little more offense without sacrificing much on the defensive side of the ball
11:15
Carlson has two extra seasons of club control and has  a little more stable offensive profile. I think he'd bring back more in trade of those two

I personally would’ve traded for Eduardo Rodriguez from the tigers. I think he would benefit from being in stl. The cost and the years of control are better than anything on the FA market. The cards also have more position players than spots.
Anthony Franco
11:17
I don't think this is a crazy idea midseason but he needs a rebound first half. Last season he missed time to injuries and for personal reasons and his whiff rate fell off a cliff when he was healthy. Not a good time to trade for him right now

Matz seemed like a good signing and then was hurt all of last year.  A lot of fans write him off.  How good can he be?
Anthony Franco
11:18
He's been a decent 3/4 starter for most of his career. Don't see why he can't do that again -- ERA in the 3.75-4.00 range with slightly above-average strikeout/walk rates
Gman
11:19
Is Zack Thompson a reliever, permanently now?
Anthony Franco
11:22
I don't think it has to be a permanent thing. It's his role for now but I could see him moving back into a swing capacity like Woodford has done the past few seasons unless he's just an elite multi-inning reliever

What is the realistic future on DeJong (knowing he is injured)?  How does he make the club and get playing time with a talent like Winn knocking on the door?  Speaking of Winn, does he get the call this year?
Anthony Franco
11:23
I'd be surprised if DeJong holds the spot all season. I do think Winn is going to be up in the second half, and between him, Gorman, Donovan and Edman, there's probably not a spot for DeJong by year's end

11:23
Is bringing up Jordan Walker now a mistake? He might be playing hurt. Since that game he was removed for "precautionary measures" for his shoulder, he hasn't hit much at all.
Anthony Franco
11:25
Got a few questions about Walker's recent dip in performance this spring. I wouldn't worry about it. The sample sizes in ST are incredibly small -- to say nothing of the variability in opponent competition -- and players go through ups and downs throughout the course of a season
11:26
If the Cardinals were at all concerned about the shoulder, he wouldn't be a starting outfielder on Opening Day. I'm inclined to defer to their judgment on that one

More saves: gio or helsley?
Anthony Franco
11:26
I'll take Helsley

Will the Cards try to resign Jordan MontgomeryJack Flaherty
Anthony Franco
11:27
Flaherty's just so hard to value right now. He's looked like an ace at his best but been hurt a bunch the past few seasons and his stuff has been down a little bit as a result
11:28
He's a guy who could get nine figures next offseason if he's awesome this year but the Cardinals can't approach that right now with the injuries. Guessing he'll be inclined to bet on himself, so it's hard for me to see a deal coming together
11:30
Montgomery's more straightforward. He's in the Taillon/Taijuan Walker bucket of solid mid-rotation type, pretty low-variance as far as pitchers go. I could see something together there, maybe in the 4/$75MM range
