the Brewers biggest problem: payroll. I think we have to trade Christian Yelich.
1) his trade value is currently as high as it will ever be. Someone (Dodgers?) will take him.  2) we can get 19 home runs a lot cheaper somewhere else. 3) his defense is good, not great. 4) we could use those dollars to lock-up Woodruff.

A Yelich trade is a lot easier said than done.  That's still a lot of money for another team to absorb for a player who was pretty good in 2023, but not back at his old star levels.  If you're a Dodgers team, for instance, with a severe need for pitching and a target on Shohei Ohtani, why also add Yelich to the mix?

Do you think it's likely they pick up Canha's option? I think so since the buyout is $2m and they already paid Winker and Anderson the equivalent of Canha's contract last year, but got almost no output for that money. At least Canha appears to have some value defensively and offensively and is a good clubhouse presence.

I'm leaning maybe 56% in favor of the option being picked up.  It's not an insignificant amount of money for a mid-payroll team, but Canha gives the Brewers depth at multiple positions and flexibility to do other things with their corner OF and 1B slots

My guess is that Burnes will be dealt.  The Woodruff injury is a potential big wrench in the works, but I suspect the Brewers have basically been expecting to deal Burnes this winter for a long time, and now they'll make the move since his value is so high.

Landing a top prospect and an MLB-ready player seems like a good ask for Burnes.  I also wouldn't rule out Burnes being the headliner of a larger deal, like a multi-player swap that might also involve one of the lower-level outfielders moved as well.  Such a deal could change the equation on a possible return, or add more to the Brewers' roster for 2024 and beyond

While I do think the D'Backs are an interesting candidate to get Burnes, I strongly doubt they'd move Pfaadt pfor him.

Depending on what happens with his shoulder, this might be a feasible scenario.  In the worst-case event that he has to miss all of 2024, perhaps Woodruff then signs a two-year extension with Milwaukee, allowing him to rehab and then make his return in 2025 in a familiar environment.

Barring an injury or anything unexpected, both of those guys will definitely be on the roster next year, maybe as early as April and in prominent roles

What young OF's do you feel have the best chance to be dealt? While there is no hurry, as they all have options, it's hard to see them keeping 5-7 young players that all play the same 3 spots when they have needs at other spots. Mitchell and Frelick, both LH's that can play all spots and have good speed, are especially similar.

Arnold made the point today that he doesn't think it's a true "surplus" since injuries are always a factor, as we saw in 2023.  The DH spot is also there for Yelich to get a partial rest day, or for one of the outfielders to get some at-bats even if they're not in the field.

My view is that Mitchell, Frelick, and Chourio are the guys Milwaukee puts in the top tier, with Wiemer, Perkins, and Taylor in the group below.  So my guess is that one of the latter group is dealt, if anyone.

Crazy trade idea - Burnes and Frelick for Juan Soto. Padres need pitching next year, Brewers always need offense. I'm sure Mark A. wouldn't approve big payroll jump. Thoughts?

I was wondering when the first Juan Soto question would pop up!

And frankly, it's not that crazy an idea, if the Padres actually were open to the idea of moving him.  It crowds up the outfield picture a little more for one season but, come on, it's Juan Soto.

It’s rumored the Brewers made a run at Pete Alonso at the trade deadline. What are the odds they take another run at him this offseason?  Especially with a familiar face pulling the strings with the Mets.

And here's the first Pete Alonso question too!  Same answer as Soto, essentially, except Alonso is a cleaner fit since that immediately solves the first base issue.

One x-factor is the relationship between the Brewers and Mets, or whether there might be any hard feelings from Attanasio about Cohen pretty openly courting Stearns for the better part of three years

If I had to pick, Adames is likelier than Burnes/Woodruff to be back in Milwaukee next year.  With uncertainty at the other three infield positions, having Adames at least keeps shortstop settled.

Perhaps not Opening Day, but I suspect he'll be up soon.  Perhaps as part of a third-base timeshare with Monasterio, perhaps as part of the first base picture with or without Canha staying.  Whole lotta perhaps.

All things considered, why would Counsell leave the safety of Milwaukee for the chaos that is New York? If unbelievably he should leave, who’s his replacement, Sweet?

Why did the Brewers let Counsells' contract expire?  Were they looking for an excuse to dump him if they didn't make the playoffs?  It boggles my mind!  Thanks!

Counsell himself told the team that he wanted to wait until after the season was over to negotiate.  From everything Attanasio and Arnold have said, they'd love for him to stay, but Counsell seems to want time to at least weigh his options.

In moving to the Mets, he might want a new challenge, a higher profile and bigger paycheque, and working with Stearns again provides some shield against the chaos that is the Mets, since in theory Stearns can finally stabilize things.

One would imagine if there's a feeling Counsell is leaving, the Brewers have had some other candidates in mind for a while.  It's possible they might just promote from within for continuity's sake, or they could explore around and have some interviews so Arnold can find his personal top choice.

Now this would be fun....the Brewers trade Burnes and/or Woodruff, but then bring in another controllable front-of-the-rotation guy.

It'd take a lot more than just Turang to do it, and the White Sox would require a king's ransom for Cease since it seems like they still think they can contend.

Ah, see, if I can come up with a name, that person isn't on the radar.  The Brewers' magic is finding all sorts of random pitchers, bringing them into the fold, and then watching as they start throwing quality relief innings
