Hey everyone, hope you're doing well this morning!
11:00
Excited to talk Braves, let's get rolling

Why option Grissom and Shewmake?
Grissom vs Shewmake
11:00
Why did the Braves send both Grissom and Shewmake down? They said it would be a "competition" but Arcia and Adrianza were worse than both of them. Everyone expected one of them to lose the job but why both of them? Isn't the team worse after this move? Thanks for the chat.

Does Orlando Arcia finish the season as the team’s shortstop or is he replaced by someone else?  And if he is replaced, who becomes the club’s shortstop - Vaughn Grissom, Braden Shewmake, or someone else?
Anthony Franco
11:01
These are just a few of a bunch of questions about the shortstop situation, so it makes sense to start there
11:03
Feels like they're just not sold on Grissom defensively yet. Can get him a little more work there in Gwinnett while Arcia holds things down for a few weeks. I'd be surprised if Grissom isn't back up sometime in May
11:04
As for Shewmake, I know the Spring Training performance was strong but that's only 14 exhibition games. He didn't do a whole lot offensively in the upper minors last season. The discussion about him getting the shortstop job always felt like a stretch. Seems like he's better suited for a utility role
11:05
Which is fine, he could be up at some point this year. But I'd take Arcia over him as an everyday player and the Braves love Adrianza as a clubhouse presence and 26th man

This isn’t a panic mode question because AA knows what he’s doing and people are forgetting the Braves already have six players that could make the All-Star team this year, so it’s not like they’re expecting the SS to hit at the top of the lineup BUT: What options might be available come deadline if they feel they need an upgrade down the stretch?
Anthony Franco
11:07
The trade options right now aren't great but there could be some decent players who come available if their teams struggle in the first half. Amed Rosario's an impending FA, so there's no reason for Cleveland to hold him if they fall out of contention. Willy Adames and Tim Anderson have a year and a half of team control left on teams that want to compete but aren't locks to be playoff competitive
11:08
If either Chicago or Milwaukee falls out of it, those guys are probably at least part of trade discussions

Do you think the Braves are planning to see how their internal options shake out before making in season/trade deadline moves?
Anthony Franco
11:09
Yeah I think this is more or less true of everybody at this point. Maybe we see a depth starter get moved in the next weeks but probably not anyone the Braves would consider clearly better than the guys they already have
My name's Eddie too
11:09
Is Eddie Rosario the starting left fielder? Do you see a bounce back year for him? Although he's been terrible so far in spring training, he's available in my fantasy league and wonder if he's worth a flier to hit .250, 20 HR today?
Anthony Franco
11:10
.250 with 20 homers isn't crazy and I guess somewhat useful for a fantasy team, but it's not especially valuable IRL when he never walks and plays below-average defense in left field
I do think he'll get first crack in left field, yeah

#13 primed for huge year. Will he have more Dingers or more SB's?
Anthony Franco
11:11
I'd go more steals than homers for Acuna, in large part because of the rule changes to get guys running more, but think he tops 30 of both if he stays healthy

Why did they trade Contreras just to get Murphy??!!?? I'd rather have Contreras/D'Arnaud than Murphy/D'Arnaud!! Please help me make sense of this trade!!
Anthony Franco
11:13
Murphy's really good. He's among the three best defensive catchers in the game, which isn't likely to ever be the case for Contreras. The offense is probably comparable -- Murphy should get a boost outside of Oakland, and Contreras isn't going to replicate a .344 average on balls in play every year
11:14
I like Contreras and think Milwaukee did well to jump in and snag him. But I'd take Murphy over him pretty easily. He's a top five catcher in my view

I live in Savannah, Georgia and for years I have not been able to watch my Braves games on TV. With the Bally Sports bankruptcy issues are there any chance I will be able to this year ?
Jerry royster
11:15
What happens with the Braves TV deal now that Bally went bankrupt?
Anthony Franco
11:16
I don't think anything changes this year. Diamond Sports Group (which operates Bally) has enough cash to continue the broadcasts while the bankruptcy process plays out. That could take months and they could try to renegotiate a new broadcasting deal that pays less in rights fees
11:18
As a fan trying to get around blackouts, I think you're hoping for Diamond to collapse and MLB to have to step in and take over. Manfred has talked about wanting to make in-market games available on MLB TV at some point but they can't do that as long as the local broadcasting contract is in place

The Braves will have money to extend Fried AFTER this season!!  Morton $20mm, Rosario $9mm, Odorizzi $10mm all coming off the books and only one year of Ozuna left.
Anthony Franco
11:19
Perhaps, although they also could've tried to backload a deal this spring to get that done without meaningfully changing the $13.5MM he'll make this year in arbitration
11:20
I don't doubt they'll give it a shot but you're basically paying open market prices next offseason when he's a year from free agency
Deemo718
11:20
Do you see the Braves extending Max Fried and if so what length of contract will he receive
Anthony Franco
11:22
I think a little around 6/162 that Rodón got right now. If he has another typical Fried season, probably pushing $200MM around this time next year
11:23
It'll be interesting to see if the Phillies get an Aaron Nola deal done. He's an impending FA and seems in the Fried ballpark, so that deal (whether an extension with Philly or in free agency) should offer some clarity on how the market's looking a year from now
SilverSlug
11:24
Why not make a play for IKF? Seems like he could be an easy target
SB
11:24
Do you think the Braves made an offer to Elvis Andrus? Do you see a difference in what Arcia and Andrus bring? Odd they wouldn't have been interested in him for the $3M range.
Anthony Franco
11:25
I don't think the Braves considered Andrus and upgrade on Arcia and I imagine they'd feel similarly about Kiner-Falefa
Lenny
11:25
in your opinion, what would a trade package look like if the braves traded max fried?
Anthony Franco
11:25
Guess I'll close out the Fried trifecta here
11:26
It would take a disastrous first half for them to trade him at the deadline, obviously. It's not happening now. If we somehow got to that point, last year's Luis Castillo return (two top 75-ish prospects and a couple mid-level fliers) feels about right

Am I on crazy pills, or has Dansby only had 1 above average season? Why is everyone ignoring his mediocrity from 2016-2021? I feel like he is Chris Johnson all over again.
Anthony Franco
11:27
He's not an impact hitter but there's a lot of value in being a plus defensive shortstop with power, to say nothing of Swanson's clubhouse reputation
