Happy Chat Monday; thanks for joining and/or reading.Tons of Qs as usual, so let's get em!

Varsho will lose catcher eligibility for next year. Do you see anything to think he will be a better than average outfielder or is he pretty much replaceable?
Brent Hershey
12:04
Something had me look at him last week with our pre-season expectations in mind ... and it's really been a disappointment; not even tracking to 20 HR at this point. Keeper stock has fallen through the floor for sure. Think he's just an average OFer come 2024.
Rick
12:10
Baty has looked bad this year. Has he lost value long-term in your opinion? How would you rank him compared to minor leaguers like Coby Mayo or Colt Keith or even to Royce Lewis assuming he stays healthy and sticks as the Twins Third Baseman? Thanks
Brent Hershey
12:10
No, he has not lost value for me because:
  • still 23 yrs/old
  • Feel like long leash as Mets 3B
  • Statcast numbers are very good (Brl%, MaxEV, HH%)
Mayo might have more HR power long-term than Baty and I like Keith a lot too, but still preferring BB to both (and Lewis too, though his injury history and now risk is a factor. Early 2024 prediction: BB will out-earn his draft spot in redraft leagues.

Would you start Cole Ragans or Severino this week, need wins fighting for 1st ?
Brent Hershey
12:10
If Wins are your only consideration, I'd probably pass on both. If it has to be one or the other, I'd go Ragans. Severino looks cooked to me right now.

My Dear Mr. Hersey,
NL 10 team 5x5. I am in the lead by the slimmest of margins. FAAB tonight (I have $24 left!) features Bell, Burger and D Robertson (some fool dropped him)
I need HRs/Rbis and saves could help too. To even get a hitter, I'd have to drop one of: J McCarthy, Frelick, JD Davis, or Flores. All of whom I wish to keep. Is it worth it to waive one of these to get the HRs of Burger?  Flores and McC are part timers but they are valuable.
Or do I keep my hitters and try to get Robertson?
Brent Hershey
12:13
Think I'd prefer Burger to Flores. Wilmer been super hot, like you said not playing every day. Could well be you look back and say you moved on from Flores at the right time. HR/RBI potential is exactly what you're buying in Burger. Good luck!

Need an OF: Kepler, Conforto or S Suzuki ?  (Leaning Kepler!)
Brent Hershey
12:17
Agreed.

12:18
Brent thanks for doing this through the year!
In a 12 team mixed 5x5 6 keeper league is it time to drop Buxton for the best OF on the wire? His stats have been disappointing and he’s now out for at least another 2 weeks.
Brent Hershey
12:18
Yes, I'd think so ... and with 6 keepers, don't think he makes that cut.

Good morning Brent-Looking forward to 2024, do you think Japanese pitcher, Yoshinobu Yamamoto SP, gets posted so he plays in the MLB in 2024? What team do you see him pitching for?
Brent Hershey
12:23
Tapped BHQ and Baseball Forecaster contributor Tom Muhall for this one (great to have friends). His response:
"I'd say 90% certain, at least. I really think it's just a matter of being offered the right contract .... Let's put it this way. If you gave me the #1 prospect draft pick, I'd take Yamamoto and not even hesitate."
I'd imagine his potential landing spot will be one of the teams always actively involved in these big-name crossovers. Will be another fun one to watch this offseason.

Hey, Brent! I'm curious to know how you'd rank these starters in dynasty (next 2-3 years):

Bryce Miller, Carlos Rodon, James Paxton, Tyler Glasnow, Reese Olson, Michael Kopech

Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:26
Glasnow, Rodón, Miller, Olson ... <gap> .... Paxton, Kopech. Think Rodón's track record overshadows extensive injury history ... though you may well disagree. Feel like Olson is underrated; would have very little interest in the final duo.

Good morning folks!!

In my 12 team h2h dynasty league (perpetual keeper/no limit) I was offered the following for Juan Soto:

Bryce Harper, Jordan Walker, Max Fried, and Matt McLain.

I have to say yes, right?!

Thanks, Brent!!
Brent Hershey
12:27
Yes; that's a serious haul. I mean the Nats did great in real life; this is better.
Dave
12:29
Hi Brent--  In a 5-by 5 OBP dynasty league.  Have an opportunity to pick up Luis Garcia (Wash).  Your thoughts on his next year and beyond value?
Brent Hershey
12:29
Aggressive approach at the plate doesn't give him OBP league appeal. Think there's still some upside, but more in a "cog" type of role than a foundational dynasty piece. Depends what your expectations are.

Any reason not to cut Adames loose?
Brent Hershey
12:32
Well, if your alternatives are worse, of course. Plate skills haven't cratered; still hitting for power; BABIP doing a number on his shaky BA. Not old at 27. Not making your decision for you, but those are the reasons to hang on.
Bob
12:34
Would you rather have Hunter Renfroe or Nolan Jones as a replacement for Josh Naylor?
Brent Hershey
12:34
I'd take my shot with Jones. Younger, Statcast darling, COL home park, would be 1B-OF eligible depending on your rules.

Thanks for the chat.  Scoresheet question here.  AL only.  How would you arrange your rotation the rest of the way if you had:  Glasnow, Joe Ryan, Ober, Bradish, Grayson Rodriguez, Gavin Williams, Tarik Skubal, Canning.
Brent Hershey
12:39
For rest of reg season, off top of my head: Glasnow, Skubal, Canning, Grayson, Bradish as my top five? Question mark b/c it's tough -- which is why you're asking me, I know I know. If Ryan comes back from his injury "fixed" -- IE, some semblance of that first half, then I find a way in for him. Would probably lean Ober if Canning doesn't come back OR for some reasons that Bradish command "thing" from yesterday becomes more frequent. I'd probably also keep hooks on the lower end for the last two spots .. you have the rotation depth to circle through guys at least.

I need some wins without damaging my ERA.  Pfaadt has 2 starts this week but faces SD and LAD.  Would you stream him or sit him in light of his recent games?
Brent Hershey
12:40
Our BHQ Matchup ratings for this week love Pfaadt. It's a big test of him for sure. If the recent K/BB numbers hold, then yes. That's how I'm leaning right now.

Anderson threw the first couple of punches, but Ramirez connected with an off-balance right that put Tim on the ground. Both might get suspended, so any idea on how long it might be and when it might start?
Brent Hershey
12:43
My sense is that we'll know quickly ... later today, probably? I'll bet they both get in the 5-10 game range -- pure speculation, though. Both likely to appeal ... think this week could well be toast for both of 'em. The sooner we know the better, of course.

12:43
Think Brash is getting more opps than Topa? Topa had more opps before and is more consistent it seems but hasn't been deployed that way
Brent Hershey
12:43
Yes, I'd put Brash ahead of Topa in terms of high leverage usage
Andy in Kansas
12:44
Josh Rojas gonna get enough PT in Sea for an AL only pick up? Need a few bags
Brent Hershey
12:44
Maaaaaybe in an AL only ... but his numbers have been empty this year. Not sure you can even count on the bags.
Andy in Kansas
12:46
Any expectations that Caballero gets more starts down the stretch?
Brent Hershey
12:46
Related, I think it's about the same. BUT ... there's a guy who so far has gotten on base and has run a little. In some spots, prefer him to Rojas.
Dave
12:47
Need to pick up a starter- can you rank Dakota Hudson, Adon (Washington), Suarez (Philly)? rest of season and next year?
Brent Hershey
12:47
ROS and 2024 rank is the same: Suarez, Adon, Hudson. Experience and track record strongly wins out here.
