Happy Monday, chatters! The volume of questions submitted already says ... it's time to get started!

Hi Brent, playoffs in our 16 team, H2H categories keeper league begin tomorrow and my team is in. My pitching is currently overflowing (+4) with guys returning from the IL and tonight’s “just in case” waiver claims of Silseth and Stripling. Have a number of young, talented arms who seem to be fading on the surface: B. Bello, H. Brown, B. Garrett, E. Perez. Also have Matz and Lugo, both of whom are performing well, but not sure how long that lasts. And then there’s Cease and Fairbanks (rest of ‘pen feels undroppable; do have Whitlock, but am considering holding). Whoever I drop will likely get nabbed in such a deep league, but which do you think are most expendable? Despite being a 2023 keeper, I’ve considered jettisoning Cease. Skills have tanked (but Ks are still somewhat there). Pitching categories are W+QS, SV+H, K, ERA, WHIP. Thanks so much!

Will do best I can here, am interpreting this as which four should you cut ... this is tough; not sure there's a right answer. In order of comfort-ness: 1) Stripling; 2) Whitlock (RP in '23); 3) Matz or Lugo (probably Matz??); 4) Garrett.
Those last two especially tough, but feel like in a keeper, you'll want to maintain Eury, Bello, Brown and Cease (even though I agree it's been rough). Main issue is that the quartet I just mentioned seems to have more 2024 value than 2023. Whew .. good luck!

Do you think E.Chase will lose the closer job in Cleveland ?
Brent Hershey
12:08
Assuming this year ... no, Francona too loyal and the stuff is too good. No qualms he's been a disappointment in '23, but don't think he'll lose the job.

Thanks for the chat! In a 12 team mixed 5x5, who is the best option ROS: J. Heim, K. Ruiz, or W. Contreras?
Brent Hershey
12:13
Willson or William?
If Willson, then my answer is Heim.
If William, then by answer is William.
So, rank is
WilliamCon / Heim / Willson Contreras / Ruiz

Is Giolito going to get rocked every start going forward? Obviously he's a bench vs TX this week, but onward?
Brent Hershey
12:15
Skills in line with last year, so would seem like the answer is no, he won't get rocked every start. But, 4.25ish ERA the rest of the way, likely?

Happy Monday and I hope you're have a great day!
5x5 Dynasty League where you can keep your entire roster.  Trying to figure out what to do with a few of my positions as I build for next year (in year 3 of a potentially never-ending rebuild of a team I took over that was dead in the water):
2B: Gelof or Turang? Either one worth holding on to or both? Have Abrams and Correa at SS with a MI spot
OF Have N Jones, McCarthy, Siri, J Duran, L Tavares and Kirillof with J Walker (assuming he'll never play 3B).  Thoughts on which to let go? Probably need to drop 2
Feel like my team is a lot of potential and not sure which of these have any real value for next year.
Brent Hershey
12:19
Gelof for sure. Turang has made some incremental improvements over the course of the season -- and Gelof will cool off some at some point, but Gelof is the better hitter. Worth holding onto in a MI spot, yes.
OF: I'd drop Siri (immense Ks means he's a BA hole, and doesn't add as much speed as one might hope) and either Taveras or Kirilloff. Probably cutting Leody if you have hope in Kiriloff staying healthy ... but that's a huge IF at this point. Still believe in AK's BA+power bat, but injury history is enough to give serious pause.

Is there a place to see a teams matchups for ROS? Hoping to find some pitchers with solid matchups down the stretch
Brent Hershey
12:22
I just googled "MLB schedule grid" and looks like some good options there.
Also "tankathon.com" has some helpful info on ROS schedule

I am leading my league, but working hard to hold on.  In a 6X6 rotisseries keeper league, would you drop Paxton and/or Eflin for Gavin Williams and/or Grayson Rodriguez for the rest of this year (and beyond).  Also, is it time to drop Abreu now that he is on the IL (I have been patient).  Worth picking up one of the recent call-ups?  Thank you
Brent Hershey
12:26
In the this year/next year balance ... I'd drop Paxton (thank him for his service) for either one of the youngsters, probably slightly prefer Grayson though it's close. Think I'd hang onto Eflin, though despite this weekend's blowup. Good control, TAM will provide support, experience over the two rooks.
Yes, think it's prob a good time to move on from Abreu (you HAVE been patient). Not a 1:1 replacement, but I have some interest in Butler and Rocchio.
Still need pitching
12:28
I have 1 spot open, E Hancock or C Ragans? (5x5 roto)
Brent Hershey
12:28
Ragans on talent/upside; but Hancock has edge on matchups and surrounding team context.

Brent! 2 quick ones -NL 10 team 5x5
  1. Will Hunter Harvey come back and get some saves?
  2. Would you trade $18 Arraez for non-keeper salaried: Burger, Finnegan and Lorenzen?
Brent Hershey
12:31
  1. It's possible, but I wouldn't count on it, especially given that Finnegan hasn't done anything to lose the job. More likely to baby Harvey through to the end of the season given his injury history.
  2. On the surface, no ... but if you're way up in BA, need a twinge of power, a few saves and some win potential SP— then perhaps. Context matters.
A bird in hand
12:33
I'm thinking of adding Masyn Winn, any chance he's impactful for ROS?
Brent Hershey
12:33
Has shown more power than anticipated, and there seems to be a role there if they want to promote him. My guess is he probably comes up, but percentages say he's unlikely to be impactful in his stint.
Andy in Kansas
12:33
Montgomery or E-Rod ROS? Specifically ratios and K's
Brent Hershey
12:33
E-Rod, fairly easily for those 2 cats.

12:38
Has Gavin Williams figured it out already? Before the last 2 starts it was a mirage but suddenly he's an ace?
Brent Hershey
12:38
Has been surprising; and handling TOR and TAM is a feat, especially since both are middle-of-the-pack in lineup strikeouts. That said, this IS the type of talent and results the scouting reports teased, so it's not like this is coming out of nowhere. Keeping those free passes in check have played a big role. Not an ace yet, but obv have to like what you see so far.
Detroit Rock City
12:38
Who gets the saves going forward in Detroit? Brieske worth an add?
Brent Hershey
12:38
I'd probably lean Foley first, then Brieske if I was speculating. Should be an open competition soon if it isn't already.

12:40
There's been no update on Kiriloff since he got his shot. Reason to worry given his history?
Brent Hershey
12:40
Ha ... given his history, "worry" is part of the deal, unfortunately. I expect we'll hear an update soon.

12:43
Good afternoon;  Scoresheet NL only league...while the top of my rotation is solid (Scherzer, Kershaw, Strider), how would you organize the rest out of Musgrove, Cobb, Giolito, Morton?  No one seems to want the job...
Brent Hershey
12:43
I'd probably slot Morton #4, Musgrove #5 (though have low confidence he returns to help), Giolito as 6 and Cobb as 7? Hopefully you have the depth to keep the hook #s low on this quartet ...
Bob
12:44
Is Reid Detmers droppable?
Brent Hershey
12:44
Yes ... though always depends on league format and other options.

12:49
Brent! How are you? It's been a bit!

On a scale of 1-10, please rate your excitement of the following players from a dynasty perspective (3 or so years). 1  = "Bah! I wouldn't even let him rot on one of my IL spots." 10 = "I'm all in on this guy, baby!"

1) Matt McLain
2) Curtis Mead
3) Jonathan Aranda
4) Jordan Walker
5) Luisangel Acuna

Bonus: A pitcher! Joe Ryan.

Thanks for all that you do!
Brent Hershey
12:49
McLain - 8
Mead - 7*
Aranda - 5*
Walker - 10
Acuña - 8
Ryan - 8

*TAM's hitter rotations play a part here; could be too easy for these guys to fall into the 3? 4? 5? games a week pile, which I think is an underrated risk with platoon-heavy teams -- the roster spots these guys take up when other comparable players are always getting 6/7  games per week. And granted, that could well change in TAM over the next three years...

12:53
Good morning, y'all!

I'm trying to understand why Yainer Diaz is so under-rostered. I'm in a 6-cat H2H league (with AVG and OBP), and he still seems quite valuable. He's only 24, has great contact/power skills.

Could he take an even bigger step next year??
Brent Hershey
12:53
He is under-rostered, is valuable, and yes, could take a bigger step up in the near future. One factor is that for whatever reason, he's not seemed to earn Dusty Baker's trust as an everyday player, despite his versatility, and so for me doesn't play as much as I would expect given the skills I see. If you trust that Dusty will eventually come around -- or that perhaps circumstances will change -- he's a great long-term target.
I'd say odds are high that Diaz will get an UP: note in the 2024 Baseball Forecaster ...

In a 12 tm h2h pts league. Please rank the following 2 step options: B.Singer (SEA, @CHC); B.Garrett (HOU,LAD); L.Allen (@CIN, DET)
