Happy Chat Monday! Thanks for stopping by — either early, in real-time, or if you’re reading this at some point after. Lots to get to in the queue (y’all killing it!), but the obligatory reminder, especially with all the questions lined up: Context clues help to get your questions answered: just a quick note of # teams, format, any non-traditional rules. Also, I’ll likely pass on open-ended questions (give a me a sleeper!). Instead, give me a trio to rank or something; which I’d be happy to do.
Let's roll!

Alright, another Monday chat! I hope that you're well, Brent.

I noticed that Nate Pearson's close to a return for the Jays. Should we be targeting him as a post-hype player? How high is his ceiling?

Thanks for the time and attention!

RTR
Brent Hershey
12:01
Thanks, RTR! And doing well and trust the same for you. Pearson is definitely a show-me player. Ceiling is high, but I expect Jays to be careful given his extensive injury history, and not sure they have a natural opening for him right now. Sure, if you have a reserve/stash slot available, might make sense, but right now I'm not going crazy pursuing him.

C.J. Abrams looks overmatched, especially on fastballs. I'm assuming he will be sent back down once Tatis is back or even sooner, but any red flags on his long term outlook?
Brent Hershey
12:03
No to the long-term questions; he's super young. Pads gave it a shot after he earned it in spring. MLB is hard. And yes, given how things are going, I'd be surprised if he's up for long.
Rick
12:04
Do you expect Rodgers to turn things around and be the long-term 2nd baseman for the Rockies or is he looking more like a good prospect who never pans out?
Brent Hershey
12:04
Still too early to call him a bust ... but on the other hand, given his uneven performance and consistent injury history, this is a big year for him. It's, um ... not going well.

Luzardo beating his matchup ratings...mostly.  @ ATL for example, was rated a sit, so I got burned, but played him vs  STL before that and got burned too.  Run him out there regardless, going forward?  At least for now....?  Health aside, is he a possible Cy Young?
Brent Hershey
12:07
As bright and amazing as that very first start was (I had him on my bench, too), I think he's likely still matchup-dependent in most formats right now. The strikeouts def help if you want to keep him in, though. Via Cy Young -- can't really take health out of it. He needs to stay out of the trainers room this year for sure. On pure talent, there COULD be a CY season in his future, but seriously doubt he'll be challenging for that soon.

young breakthrough pitchers fact or fantasy....luzardo,zimmerman,paddock, snyder,,,,
Brent Hershey
12:10
Figuring for this year, I give Luzardo the best chance of this quartet, Paddack a distant second. Not yet a BruceZ believer. Assuming you mean Snider on KC (?) -- so few innings as a reliever, but yes there's def some nastiness potential there.

Crawford is off to a great start. Is it possible he's a .300/15/10 player?
Brent Hershey
12:12
(Assuming JP) That BA is a reach, but do think that .275-280 could be possible with teens/teens HR/SB. And if that's the case, he's likely back up nearer to the top of that lineup, which gives him a nice RS boost, too.

Who's the real Josh Lowe?  His TAM Org write-up is a 9C that says he's a "dynamite 5-tool athlete", and he batted .291 at AAA last year.  Then in other write-ups and podcasts, I keep hearing concern about his BA, and that maybe he was ranked too high in lists.  Conflicting info, I'm not sure how much to value him in a keeper league where I'm using up a Bench spot to hold onto him for the future.  Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:19
Very good question. Remember we're less than 50 AB into his MLB exposure. We also noted in those reports that still some swing/miss to his game. I think it's the combination of that, plus perhaps the improved hit tool we mentioned last year wasn't fully taking the downgrade of AAA arms into account.
I think you'd still prefer to hold in a keeper league if you have a bench spot for him -- that's what a bench spot can be used for, right? Waiting for the adjustment period on a talented youngster. The HR/SB upside -- even if it comes w/ a not-great BA -- is a combination we seek. He's definitely worth watching over the next month or so, though.

Yo Brent, quick question! I recently picked up AJ Puk. Any chance he works himself into being the closer by year's end?

Luv the chat!
Brent Hershey
12:19
A chance? Yes. Feel like that's his future, more than becoming a starter. And I have the hunch that talented players will get shots in OAK this year as the season goes on.

Would you rather have Lane Thomas or D Ruf in NL 5x5? Also- thoughts on S Strider?
Brent Hershey
12:21
Ruf. Realize it's not a great start, but he's getting a lot of leash right now; more than I expected given SF's platoon-happy ways.
Strider someone I try to hang onto, esp in an NL-only. That stuff will be useful somewhere, and I have confidence the Braves will figure it out.

Maybe I dont get it - shouldnt teams like Pittsburgh and Baltimore GIVE at bats to players like Alford and DJ Stewart to see what you have with them instead of releasing them? Ok, maybe dont give them 400 abs but at least KEEP them around if you end up trading the names in front of them!
Brent Hershey
12:25
I think it's such open competition on those two squads, at least, that they may feel like they've given those players their shots already. Stewart for sure. I was surprised that PIT cut bait so quickly on Alford, though, especially since he had an interesting stretch at the end of 2021.

How many of this group will end up as closers by end of season.? Thank you! Munoz,Holmes,Duran,Fulmer
Brent Hershey
12:27
1.5 (Duran - full share // Muñoz - committee share). Love Holmes and like Fulmer, but NY has so many good choices should Chapman falter and I'm becoming a bit more confident in Soto keeping that job (but admit it's control-dependent and Fulmer has looked good so far)

Thoughts on 3 catchers  Zach Collins, Chirinos and Hummel.  I realize players are from both leagues but I am looking for thoughts on NL/AL only leagues 2 catcher traditional 5x5. thanks
Brent Hershey
12:29
In 2 catcher leagues, pretty sure you ride/attempt to acquire Collins. Not sure how long it lasts given his history and the squeeze in TOR, but he's doing it now and is backing it up. Then Hummel >>> Chirinos easily (RC just a placeholder for Rutschman; think Hummel will have more AB rest of the season)

12 team NL only.  Jake Fraley or Odubel Herrera?
Brent Hershey
12:30
Fraley. Better plate skills and think he'll run more.

12 Team H2H 5X5 scoring. Of the following four starting pitchers, who do you trust the most for the ROS? Eric Lauer, Aaron Ashby, Triston McKenzie, Trevor Rogers
Brent Hershey
12:31
Trevor Rogers is easy choice for me, even given the start. Not even close during draft season; no reason to waver on that after just 3 GS.

Pick 1 SP for this week: Charlie Morton @ CHC or Alex Wood vs WSH?
Brent Hershey
12:32
Wow, our numbers for them are both excellent. Wood is a tick higher.

What do you think of Corbin Martin as a deep NL only stash? Your depth chart doesn’t give him much chance of starting, but it looks like there might be plenty of opportunity to make the rotation or a high-leverage relief role in Arizona.
Brent Hershey
12:34
Yes to all (including that perhaps our depth chart is underselling him). It's a stash, so we're not predicting anything, but I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to pitching coach Brent Strom for guys that have shown SOMETHING in their past.

12:36
Brent, your thoughts on Joc Pederson. I have a chance to trade for him in return for SD closer, Taylor Rogers. I need the power and 1st in saves. I am worried that Joc is still a PT player. We are a 5X5 daily league.
Brent Hershey
12:36
He IS a part time player. 3 AB vs. lefties so far this year. Have to think Rogers is way more valuable than Joc, even with being able to move him in/out of the lineup.

When does Gabriel Moreno get the call to Toronto?  Ditto, MJ Melendez to Kansas City?
Brent Hershey
12:39
Ha ... when TOR and KC front offices 1) deem them ready, and 2) have a spot to play them. Seems like MJM is closer, but has started out super slow in AAA. Moreno holding his own at first shot at AAA; but not banging down the doors yet. I'd lean towards MJM first (mid-season) and Moreno maybe in August? But that's just a wild guess.

Projections for Nick Solak? What's the likelihood he gets more PT?
Brent Hershey
12:42
He's interesting; picked him up in one league of mine this weekend. Think he could take over Willie Calhoun's place in the lineup at some point; the early-season batted-ball metrics for Solak are REALLY good. Also could well have 2B/OF eligibility soon. It's a good WatchList player
