Good Monday! 11 days of the season down — enough to make some very early observations? That's what we do here, though remember there are 25 weeks left. Ton of questions in the queue already, remember to help me out w/ context (league size, any funky categories, etc) ... and away we go!

Good morning, Brent.

I was a big fan of Rowdy Tellez headed into the season, but he seems to be struggling out of the gate. Good buy-low opportunity?

Thanks!
Brent Hershey

Morning, Unc! (Well, technically afternoon now I guess.) I am still holding on to Tellez—one of my pre-season faves—where I can, though at times in on my bench. The Statcast/hard hit data is still phenomenal for Tellez; but I do wonder with Gurriel Jr coming back AND the slow start, if Rowdy finds the MLB bench bit more often. Cautiously optimistic, though, that it turns around for him soon.

Hi, all! Jonathan India continued to produce this week, spraying the ball to all fields. With top-5-pick pedigree and a 2020 “secret offseason,” should we believe? He seems like an especially fortunate endgame grab in OBP leagues.

Thanks, Brent. Love this feature!
Brent Hershey

Yeah, I'm in on India at least here in the early going. Am curious that he hasn't taken a walk yet, but history of double-digit bb% rates in the minors. Added bonus, is that in many leagues, could gain 2B/3B very soon if not already. I'd ride that Reds wave with him for now.

Hi Brent...Many thanks to you and the BHQ team for getting us ready for the season...B. Lowe and Yastrzemski are slow starters on my team.....should I be looking to sell low on either of them? (12 team mixed Roto)
Brent Hershey
12:11
I don't think I'd look to sell just yet, but the increased K rate for both is something to keep an eye on. Both were sought-after young players in draft season for a reason; I'd not bail just yet, though in 12-teamers you'll want to consider it a bit earlier than in 15s.

Hey, (mixed league 5x5) waited on 1B, ended up with Belt and White, neither who is producing.. do I move DJ to 1B and start Segura (who's on my bench) or keep w/ Belt?  Offence is rolling - 1st in Homers.. lower third in steals.. Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:14
If your offense is rolling, you certainly have some options. Belt had a rough spring and I think is just taking longer to get ramped up; produced some yesterday of course. But given you could use some speed, could well make sense to play Segura over him right now and hang onto Belt on your bench. The in-season importance of multi-position guys! Could well me that for now it's time to move on from White -- still like him long-term, but your options look better right now.

Sorry, misfire. NL only, 5 x 5, 11 teams so waiver wire is bare. I need to replace Camargo and Arcia, and will likely be stuck with my choices for the better part of the season. Bidding will be competitive. Who should I break out the FAAB amongst Ruf, Evans, or Panda? If there's a clear # 1 LMK so I can maximize my chances.
Brent Hershey
12:18
No problem, glad to help ... Oh, yeah, the -only league waiver wires! I'd probably rank them in the order you have em ... Ruff has the biggest tool of the three (power) and Kapler seems to find room for him. Hard to buy in on Evans' quick start, and can't see that he finds a prominent role once Ke'Bryan gets back. Would be a decent sized gap for me to Panda. Good luck!

I know it's hard to generalize but where do the Top 20 International prospects fit in among the Top 100 prospects.  For example, where would Cespedes or Colas fit in?
Brent Hershey
12:21
Colas more than Cespedes, and possibly very end of the Top 100 for now? Really depends on who the ranker is; I'm more that I need to see and/or get reports of these bonus babies first before trying to shoehorn them into rankings. In Colas case (and most 2021 international signs), these are 16 y/o kids.

Happy Monday, Brent! Quick closer question. For the rest of the season, who do you prefer — Julian Merryweather or Diego Castillo?

Thanks! :-)
Brent Hershey
12:21
And to you also! Give me Merryweather.

Hi Brent, 12-team NFBC OC, please rank these three 2-start pitchers for this week only:
12:24
  • N. Eovaldi: at Minn, home vs CWS; Matthew Boyd: at Houston, at Oakland; Taijuan Walker: home vs Phil, at COL.  Thanks.
Brent Hershey
12:24
Our figures say Eovaldi; Walker, Boyd.

12:26
Did you catch Luke Weaver's start yesterday? Buying or selling?
Brent Hershey
12:26
For now, just part of the ups and downs of Weaver [says the guy who had him on his bench :-( ]. In general, need to see several of these good starts put together before I'm buying. History has just been too inconsistent.

12:27
Are you a Domingo German believer? It was only 2 bad starts, I still like him, but will he even get that 5th starter job back?
Brent Hershey
12:27
In the pitcher, yes, I think he can still be productive. Lean towards his demotion more b/c of scheduling (Yanks have off days) than strictly performance based. He'll get plenty of starts this year.
Stephen
12:28
Any under the radar starters you've liked so far?
Brent Hershey
12:28
Caught Taylor Widener's final spring training start; rostered him a couple places, and been impressed with mix of stuff, command, and poise so far. Would not surprise me if he stays in the rotation when Gallen returns.

12:30
Tough start for CJ Cron. I'm obviously holding, but how long do you hold him in a 10 team mixed? (deeper rosters)
Brent Hershey
12:30
Yeah, fluky start; weird batted ball metrics (crazy GB% rate). Given his history, chalk it up to small sample. If you've got deep roster room, I'd keep him as long as possible on your bench. He'll bust out soon enough

12:33
Were you a Dylan Moore believer in the pre szn? I liked the upside, but can't help but get worried when I see this type of start from a guy who had one good (short) season.
Brent Hershey
12:33
I was not. Full disclosure -- I do miss on some of these late bloomers like Moore from time to time b/c I'm naturally skeptical (and it's embellished this year b/c of teh short season, as you say). But I do wonder how long he will continue to get chances given the younger talent base they have there (and on the way).

Hi Brent, it looks like you made a significant winning bid for naquin last night in tout. do you really like him? better than people like travis shaw , A cabrera or thomas in NL only?
Brent Hershey
12:37
Ugh, yeah the FAAB bug bit me hard with Naquin last night and have a bit of buyers remorse. Such is the FAAB game. But ... yes, I do like him better than those three you mention in NL-only. Naquin's early-season Statcast numbers have been phenomenal. Obv not going to continue the HR pace, but there's power and speed in his profile that I think are becoming unlocked. Great hitters park, that offense is rolling. Wonder a bit about playing time, though Winker/Senzel have not been bastions of health.
Porcho Villa
12:39
Are you buying Nick Senzel's post-hype breakout? Small sample, but BB%, CT%, sprint speed looking great so far.
Brent Hershey
12:39
Good foundations, yes, and Senzel's age a plus, too. Obv health is the biggest obstacle. But a fan of the skills overall.

Thoughts on Jared Walsh remaining a solid producer this season? Thinking about making a move for him in my 10-team roto keeper.
Brent Hershey
12:42
Perfect example of another late bloomer type who's producing. To have him basically continue his streak from end of 2020 here in his first 30 PA has been impressive. Love how he works the opposite field. Keeper in a 10-team league? Still TBD, but might not hurt to have the option after we see what a full season is like from him.

In a 12 team H2H categories league, I need to make some tough cuts to get my returning Nats active. Which two SP would you consider cutting-- Kluber, F. Peralta, Rodon, Manaea, Pineda, Corbin?
Brent Hershey
12:45
Hmm ... probably Kluber and Manea. Kluber's getting rostered on reputation, and not sure that Manaea has the stats "juice" you need in a 12-teamer compared to your other options.

Dodger's IF could become an interesting watch.  Lux looks the part however his gb% has increased while McKinstry early BPV of 135 w 42%GB & 42%FB & of course you have Taylor still fighting for playing time w an avg BPV of 40-43ish and his GB% has increased up to a 56% this year.  Lux has the pedigree, what do we need to know about McKinstry?
Brent Hershey
12:51
If this wasn't the Dodgers, I'd waive off McKinstry's start more easily. But they continue to do a great job w/ player development and it seems like there's a possibility here of another hit. My hunch would be that given Lux's pedigree, LA will give him every opportunity to hang onto 2B job and secure full-time AB. If/when, then seems like McKinstry / Taylor would be fighting over the same PT. I need to wait until after Bellinger returns (and assuming no other injuries) to assess for sure. LA continues to find good players to mix/match with, which creates issues for us fantasy managers.
Randy
12:52
What kind of production are you expecting from Tatis when he returns?
Brent Hershey
12:52
Boy, just not sure. Still can't quite believe he's that close to returning -- and every medical pro says the shoulder is weakened and this could happen again. I'm planning around him not being the player we thought for 2021 at this point. Maybe he defies that -- but then it's gravy for us.
